Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we get asked most often, with honest answers — straight from the engineer.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. We never charge a call-out fee — you only pay for the work carried out and any parts used. We'll always give you a clear quote before starting.
How quickly can you reach me?
Our average emergency arrival time is 30 minutes across St Neots, Cambridge, Bedford and Huntingdon. We'll give you a realistic ETA the moment you call.
Will you damage my door when you open it?
Almost never. Nine out of ten lockouts are opened non-destructively using picking, bumping or decoding. We only drill as a last resort and with your consent.
Are your locks insurance-approved?
Yes. We fit BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlocks on timber doors and TS007 3-star anti-snap Euro cylinders on uPVC/composite doors — both meet UK home insurance requirements.
Do you cover CCTV as well as locks?
Yes — Urban Locksmith & CCTV Services. We design and install 2MP–4K systems for homes, shops and trade premises, with mobile app setup before we leave.
Are your engineers vetted?
Every engineer is DBS-checked, we're Safe Contractor approved and a member of the Master Locksmiths Association — so the person at your door is exactly who you'd expect.
[Emergency Lockouts] How fast can you get to me at night?
Our 24/7 engineers aim to be at your address within 30 minutes anywhere in our core coverage area. We'll give you a realistic ETA the moment you call.
[Emergency Lockouts] Do you charge extra for evenings or weekends?
No. Our pricing is the same day and night. The only variable is the lock or part required, which we'll quote before starting work.
[Non-Destructive Entry] Will picking the lock damage it?
Properly executed lock picking leaves no visible damage and doesn't degrade the cylinder. We use the same techniques manufacturers use for testing.
[uPVC Door Locks] My uPVC door won't lock — is the whole door ruined?
Almost never. In most cases it's a worn gearbox inside the multi-point strip, which we can replace without removing the door.
[uPVC Door Locks] Can you upgrade to anti-snap at the same time?
Yes — most uPVC doors take a Euro cylinder, so we can swap in a 3-star anti-snap cylinder while we're on site.
[Sash Jammers] Do I need a sash jammer if I have anti-snap locks?
It's belt-and-braces — anti-snap defeats the most common attack, sash jammers defeat the next most common (lifted-handle prising). We recommend both for any ground-floor entry.
[New Locks] Which lock does my insurer expect?
For timber doors, a 5-lever BS3621 mortice deadlock. For uPVC and composite doors, a 3-star (or 1-star + 2-star handle) anti-snap Euro cylinder. We'll confirm against your specific policy wording.
[Lost / Snapped Keys] I just need a spare cut — do you charge a call-out?
For straightforward key copying we'd usually invite you to one of our trade partners; we can quote both options when you call.
[Anti-Snap Locks] What does 'TS007 3-star' actually mean?
It's the British Standard that certifies a cylinder against snapping, picking, drilling and bumping at the highest tested level. Any 3-star cylinder is enough on its own; a 1-star cylinder needs a 2-star handle to match.
[Smart Locks] What if the battery dies?
Every smart lock we fit either retains the mechanical key or has an emergency USB-C/9V terminal so you can never be locked out.
[CCTV Installation] How many cameras do I need?
For a typical 3–4 bed home, 4 cameras is usually right: front door, driveway, back garden, and either a side return or garage. We'll walk the perimeter and tell you exactly.
[CCTV Installation] Will I be able to view it from my phone?
Yes — every system we install ships with a free mobile app for live viewing and playback, configured before we leave.
